The Junk Drawer (high use spaces)

I have shared before that one of the mental hurdles we have in our homes is thinking that once we declutter and organize that it should just stay like that.

But, in my experience of doing the work and working with many women on these topics, the reality is that we live in our homes, we use our homes, and decluttering is a ROUTINE.

The good news is that it IS easier and takes a lot less time when we’ve done some decluttering and organizing to start us out.

The JUNK DRAWER is one area that needs regular maintenance in our home (because it is regularly used and because it is a catch-all for things that don’t have other homes and things that don’t get put back in their homes).

We renovated our kitchen this winter, and ‘reset’ the junk drawer but it still ends up being full of all the things and spilling out onto the counter.

So at 8:17am on a Tuesday I unloaded all the contents of the drawer and sorted it on the counter:

  • stuff to go back into the drawer
  • stuff to go into the office
  • garbage (went right into the bin)
  • tools to put away in the shed
  • a pile of stuff for Conor to go through.

Then I put the piles where they belong, Conor eventually sorted his pile, and the whole thing was done in less than 25 minutes.

So, don’t be discouraged by the idea of your home getting messy and unorganized. It is part of USING a home and SHARING a home. And little bits of maintenance can go such a long way.
