Three Ways to Introduce Solids to Baby | Pros & Cons |

Pureed bought as a puree (baby food) or food is put through a blender and blended to a soft consistency.

PROS

Can use a variety of foods
       Mess can be contained
Easy to buy food and pack for travelling
       Can be homemade

CONS
Baby relies on adult to feed them
Baby may have hard adjustment to lumpier textures
       Expense of buying pre-made

Mashed soft or cooked food is mashed with a fork or mill so there is still a lumpy consistency.
PROS
       Homemade (cheaper)
       Baby feeds themselves
Baby learns to control food into the mouth and movement of food to back of throat
Baby more likely to try new foods  and textures (than with pureed approach)
Can also spoon feed baby, when desired
Baby learns  fine motor skills and hand-mouth coordination

CONS
May be time consuming to prepare foods
Can only use foods that are soft, cooked or put through a mill
       Can be very messy
Must prepare ahead of time for travel
       Did I mention it’s messy?
Some babies gag when learning how much food their mouths can handle, and how to push that food to the back of their throat

Baby Led Weaning soft/cooked foods are kept in larger pieces for baby to hold and gnaw on.

Debate on the risk of choking. Some BLW advocates say its gagging caused by baby learning to move food in mouth. Training in infant choking response is recommended
